Difference Between Cannabis Oils. Each user reports a different experience when using Cannabis oils used throughout their treatment.
Some achieve better results with CBD – others with THC. And there is also the full spectrum oils, with all the components of the plant. So, what are the differences between these types of oil?
Difference Between Cannabis Oils.
Full-spectrum oil extracts maintain the entire profile of the Cannabis plant. That is, they contain a wide variety of chemical compounds: varied cannabinoids, including THC, THCa, CBD, CBDa, CBG and CBN, terpenes, flavonoids, proteins, phenols, sterols, and esters.
Although not as well known and researched as CBD, these other elements also have therapeutic potential. Cannabinoids CBN and CBG, for example, are found in the full spectrum. And studies have shown that both contain anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and analgesic properties.
Isolated CBD Oil.
CBD alone is the purest form of naturally occurring cannabidiol, containing up to 99.9%. Its purity is due to the removal of all other compounds found in the plant, including terpenes, flavonoids, parts of plants, and other cannabinoids.
This pure isolate is usually called CBD crystals because it comes in a solid, diamond-like form. These diamonds or CBD crystals are carefully crushed and ground into fine powder to facilitate consumption.
CBD oil attracts doctors more because it has no psychoactive effect, such as THC. In some patients, the “degree” of THC (even though it is low in the full spectrum) can cause paranoia and anxiety. The anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsive properties of CBD have already been shown to favor treatments for diseases such as epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn’s disease.
Isolated THC Oil.
THC is the main psychoactive compound of marijuana that gives the famous “High”. It can be consumed by smoking marijuana. It is also available in oils, edible products, tinctures, among others. THC, however, has many other characteristics.
It also works as an anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antiviral, hypotensive, neuroprotective, appetite stimulant, antiemetic (reduces the desire to vomit), analgesic, sedative, anticonvulsant, antitumor, neuroendocrine modulator, antipyretic, antioxidant, and can even be used in the treatment of glaucoma.
Broad Spectrum Oil.
In this oil, as in Full Spectrum, the other compounds found in the plant are preserved in the extract. Except one: THC. That is, it brings together all the full benefits of Cannabis without the risk of psychoactive effects. So, it can be used more safely in cases such as children with autism, or people who already take other sedative medications.
THC, whilst having several therapeutic effects, maybe lacking in other cases. It varies from patient to patient. And it is best to test and observe the effects, under medical guidance.
These extracts are desirable for several reasons. From an experimental point of view, they replicate the flavor and aroma profile of the plant. From a therapeutic or medicinal point of view, you get all the benefits of the entourage effect – which is the theory that the various components of the plant work synergistically to improve the action of active substances, such as THC and CBD.
Difference Between Cannabis Oils. Interaction of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.
It’s not all about cannabinoids when it comes to marijuana. Although the therapeutic potential of THC and CBD appears strongly in scientific research, there is much to be studied in the more than 500 chemical compounds in the plant, each with its therapeutic properties.
More than that, science still needs to prove how the combination of several of these compounds interacts in the body and enhances their therapeutic effects. This is what the doctor Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, considered the ‘father of Cannabis’, called the “entourage effect”.
In 1998, the renowned scientist, along with Shimon Ben-Shabat, published an article confirming evidence of these effects. According to him, the endocannabinoid system reacted better by further stimulating the activity of endocannabinoids, when Cannabis was composed of several elements, albeit inactive, and not just one.
In other words, think about the Difference Between Cannabis Oils. A drug with THC and CBD levels – or the union of any other compounds – would work better than oil with just one of these cannabinoids. It is easy to understand why: if each element has a different effect on the body, isolating the elements reduces the range of possible therapeutic results.
Think about the relationship between THC and CBD. According to reports from patients with chronic pain, the former has more effects in reducing suffering than the latter. Only THC has psychoactive effects – and not every patient can or wants to feel high. Especially as each person reacts in different ways.
Marijuana psychoactivity can increase anxiety in some. And there comes the role of CBD: it has the potential to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC.
Or, together, they can act even more in improving pain. In 2010, scientists invited 177 cancer patients who, despite the use of opioids, suffered from pain caused by cancer. Some took, over two weeks, a medicine with the same dosages of THC and CBD, another with ly THC, and a third group received a placebo.
Those who reported the most relief were the patients in the first class, who received doses of THC and CBD.
But it is not just the interaction between cannabinoids that can make a difference. Cannabis has many other elements, including flavonoids and terpenes. Again, each of them has its
Neurologist Ethan Russo, a renowned researcher in the field of Cannabis, reviewed a series of studies to evaluate these compounds and write about the “entourage effect”. And he mentions, among other cases,
limonene, a terpene that gives the characteristic citrus smell of lemon and orange, and that are also present in Cannabis.
Tests carried out on mice suggest that this chemical component may work as an anxiolytic – or even be used as an inhibitor of cancerous breast cells. Mircene was able to create muscle relaxation in rats. Because it is a sedative, it is often used to help patients with insomnia.
Other terpenes may do even better in partnership with other components of Cannabis, according to Russo. An example is the treatment of acne. According to the researcher, CBD “offers great promise to mitigate the increased production of sebum in the pathological root of acne”.
In addition to three other terpenes – limonene, linalool and pinene -, which inhibit the proliferation of
Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, responsible for the formation of pimples, can provide a complete remedy.
“Considering the minimal toxicity already known to CBD and terpenoids to these discoveries (mentioned above), new acne treatments using extracts with a predominance of CBD, through a multiple targeting route, may present a new and promising therapeutic approach, with minimal risks compared to isotretinoin, ”writes Russo.
Isotretinoin is the remedy used to treat acne. But it is so aggressive that use during pregnancy is not recommended.
There is still much research to advance in discoveries about the entourage effect. But with the legalization of Cannabis in several countries, the trend is for news to appear soon – and more often than in recent times.
Even so, many doctors consider that full-spectrum oils are more efficient than isolated oils. However, because it contains THC concentrations, it is not always indicated for patients with psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia, for example.
The full spectrum, according to doctor Gilberto Kocerginsky, who has worked with medical cannabis since 2014, is indicated for muscle relaxation, pain control, improvement of the appetite, reduction of epileptic seizures, among others.
